How to Set up Handoff in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite

"Handoff" is not a new word to the world, following the release of OS X Yosemite, and iOS 8. Handoff commits to allowing you to hand off things from one device to another. It works when your devices are signed in with the same Apple ID and the Bluetooth is enabled. For example, if you are writing an email on Mac but want to keep writing on iPad, you can make dreams come true now.
Apart from the main dock on Mac, you will see another dock which is showing what is running on your other iOS devices. Likewise, on the Lock Screen of iOS devices, you will see an icon at the left-bottom corner showing what is running on Mac. At present, Handoff supports the following Apple apps: Mail, Safari, Maps, Messages, Reminders, Calendar, Contacts, Pages,Numbers and Keynote.

Ensure that your Mac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro are models newer than 2011. Also, iOS device can be iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 5s, 5c, 5 or 4s which is running iOS 8. For iPads, iPad 3 and the later are allowed. Besides, all the devices can not be put aside more than 30 inch. Finally, make sure that all devices have signed in with the same Apple ID.

How to Set up Handoff

Now, let’s see how to set up Handoff in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite.

Enable Handoff in iOS 8

Go to Settings>General> Handoff &Suggested Apps and toggle Handoff on to enable handoff in iOS 8.

Enable Hand off in OS X Yosemite

Firstly, you need to go to System Preferences and click on Bluetooth to turn it on. Then, return to the System Preferences page and click on General. Tick on the box that says Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.

Using Handoff

With everything set up, you can start using Handoff. Here, I will show give you an example below to show you how handoff works.

Step 1: Write something in Notes on iPad. When you are writing, there will be a dock appear on Mac. In this dock, you can find the icon that showing your notes on iPad. If you want to hide the dock, you can press both the Command and Tab key at the same time.

step 2: Find the icon in the dock and open the note. You can see what you have just written on iPad on your Mac now. You can continue to write this note on your Mac.

Ensure that your devices are awake and unlocked. For example, if you are browsing a web page on iPad and the iPad automatically locks, Handoff will stop work until you wake the iPad up and unlock it.
